A Different Kind of Talk, Another Way to Act in Classrooms and Communities

The Ohio PPI held its annual institute at Kent State University.  The participants learned basic NIF practices, including how to explore options, weigh others' views and consider the costs and consequences of public policy decisions.  Participants also learned ways to adapt NIF practices to curriculum content and school decision making.  Below are a few images from the day long event.

October 22, 2002 High School Alcohol Forum

Marilyn Bokrass, Kim Sebaly, and Jackie Peck helped students from Lake and Geauga Counties deliberate on alcohol abuse on Tuesday, October 22, 2002. The forums, held at Lakeland Community College, were guided by the NIF issue book, "Alcohol: Controlling the Toxic Spill." More than 100 high school students participated by telling personal stories, thoughtfully responding to the various approaches to this issue, and critically examining the values they hold. The forums were sponsored by the Lake Geauga Center and Project CARE.

September 11, 2002 Community Forums

September 11 marked the first anniversary of the terrorists' attack on America.  The Ohio Public Policy Institute (PPI) at Kent State University in collaboration with the Portage Foundation held two community forums to deliberate the issue of terrorism, what it means to each individual and the differing approaches that are being considered to combat the threat and regain a measure of national security. Among the approaches that were discussed were homeland security, waging all-out war and reducing the hatred that fuels terrorism.  The first forum was held at the KSU library with Karen Drotar moderating and Marilyn Bokrass recording.  The second forum was held at the Kent Free Library with moderators Kady Downing and James Tinnin.
