3/31/2005  Gathering  Taking our Models Seriously: Applying Cognitive Science to Help Students Applying Cognitive Science to Help Students Learn to Solve Problems  Kent Student Center - Room 204  Faculty Professional Development Center  7:00pm - 9:00pm

Marsha Lovett, Carnegie Mellon University

The Educational Psychology Learning Community, OLN, fpdc, Office of
the Provost, and University Teaching Council are pleased to bring to
Kent State University Dr. Marsha Lovett. Dr. Lovett is Associate
Director of the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Assistant
Professor of Psychology. She received her doctorate in Cognitive
Psychology from Carnegie Mellon (1994) and, except for a year as a
visiting scholar at UC Berkeley¹s School of Education, has spent her
academic career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her research interests
center on learning during problem solving, specifically on how
students acquire effective problem-solving strategies and how
individual differences between people impact the learning process.

It has been said that a theory is only to be trusted after it has
been built into a successful commercialized product. By this metric,
Einstein's theory of relativity has finally proven itself: global
positioning systems (GPS) use relativistic quantities to accurately
compute a person's latitude and longitude, and they have thrived
since coming to market several years ago.

So where is cognitive science on this continuum? In this talk, Dr.
Lovett will discuss some of the empirical and theoretical results
(as well a commercial product or two) from cognitive science that
are being tested and applied in real classroom settings. In
particular, she will review a theoretical framework for how students
learn and then discuss how it is being applied to help students
learn to solve problems. The benefits from this integration of basic
and applied work are better student learning outcomes and refined
cognitive theory.

4/7/2005  Seminars  Portraits of Practice: Interested in Qualitative Methods of Research? Utilizing ATLAS.ti versus NUD*IST as a Research Tool  2nd Floor Lounge, Moulton Hall  Faculty Professional Development Center  11:00pm - 12:30pm

Carrie L. Giovannone, Educational Research Specialist, fpdc

This presentation will begin with a brief overview of the NUD*IST
qualitative computer program in contrast to a demonstration of
another qualitative computer program called, ATLAS.ti. This software
program can be used to code text documents, photos, drawings, and
audio and video tape. ATLAS.ti also has a “network view” option
which allows you to view and manipulate a graphic depiction of your
project. Given the sophistication of the program, the possibilities
of using ATLAS.ti as a research tool are endless. In addition to
research, instructors could use ATLAS.ti as a teaching tool. We will
demonstrate and discuss these various uses for an emerging industry
standard.
