At the tertiary education level, relatively few professors, whether new or experienced, have had any formal training in education and teaching. Most have had extensive experience on the receiving end of teaching: some of it bad, some good, some remarkable. It is no surprise that most college and university faculty members teach in the same ways that they were taught: lectures for large classes and seminars for small ones. Sometimes these methods work well, but frequently there are other teaching/learning strategies that might work better.

This module gives an overview of a wide range of teaching and learning strategies that might be useful in the tertiary setting. In addition, it focuses attention on helping faculty choose good strategies for specific combinations of settings, students, and subjects. The overall aim is to increase the choices available to faculty for deciding how to teach a given course or unit.
