“…knowing myself is as crucial to good teaching as
knowing my students and my subject.” ---Parker Palmer, The Courage to
Teach (1998)
Why is it important to know about learning styles? If
you don’t understand how your students learn best, all those hours you’ve
spent preparing for class could prove to be a waste of time. Likewise, if
you are not aware of your own preferences when it comes to learning, you
will be overlooking an important factor in the teaching/learning equation.
This module provides guidelines and resources to:
-
Introduce Future Teachers to concepts related to
learning diversity among students, including various perspectives on
intelligence, metacognition, learning preferences,
temperament/personality typologies, and need-fulfillment as it relates
to academic performance and classroom behavior;
-
Identify personal and student characteristics that
may influence success in learning via completion of inventories; and
-
Offer suggestions for incorporating knowledge of
student learning characteristics into the teaching process.
