Whether this is your 20th year or first year teaching adults in higher education, a focus on the basics is a good idea. Creating an effective course or learning opportunity can be a challenge, but if done correctly, rewarding for the students and instructor(s). A focus on the basics includes how to (a) construct syllabi, (b) develop course policies, and (c) create a culture of respect and learning.

The “Getting Started” module is designed to assist the reader in taking the first in a series of steps toward the ultimate goal of creating an effective learning community.
