·        Planning and Using Course Syllabi

o       Problem-Based Learning Activity

o       Collaborative Activity – Have students critique a course syllabus in small groups and then combine with other groups to synthesize and summarize findings.

·        Selecting and Sharing Course Policies

o       Choose from a series of scenarios depicting difficult situations or “what if” situations. Students and instructors engage in f2f or online discussions regarding the issues presented in the scenarios. Scenarios related to attendance, participation, and plagiarism are presented

·        Meeting students for the first time (f2f and online)

o       Have students brainstorm ideas for how to get to know their students’ names.

o       Have students demonstrate different icebreaker activities and explain the circumstances under which they can be used.

o       Have students generate a list of the characteristics of a learning community and strategies they will use to create one. Have students record their ideas, seal them in an envelope and then the instructor will mail to the students before they teach their first/next class to remind them of the ideas they once had regarding learning communities.

o       Have students engage in a role-play situation where one group represents instructors and the other group, students. Have the them role-play receiving a syllabus on the first night of class and reflect upon how they felt both as students and as instructors.
